Obamacare? There’s An App For That.

Recently the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) issued a press release announcing Lyfechannel as the winner of the Healthfinder.gov Mobile App Challenge.  Healthfinder.gov is the HHS website dedicated to providing information on prevention and wellness topics, including the preventive services covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Healthfinder.gov is a companion site to HealthCare.gov, which is focused more on health insurance and the ACA.

The winning Healthfinder.gov mobile app, called myfamily, is intended to help individuals manage their family’s health through customized prevention information for each family member.  Watch the 2 minute video demonstration here.  The app is part of the government’s push to get people engaged in their own health care.  Research shows that patients who are better engaged in their own health care have better health outcomes.  There’s hope that tools, like a mobile app, will also encourage people to be better health consumers.  Dr. Howard Koh, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health, stated that the myfamily app “helps put the power of prevention at the fingertips of Americans.”
